despite the handle name, it’s…NOT SEXUAL… hikaru’s instinct is just to absorb the souls of living beings as an act of selfish, hungry and an unknowable desire for intimacy; he’s very empty and cold and lonely and that void will never be satiated by the nature of what kind of β€œcreature” he is. so this is his β€œdrive”

functionally, he’s aromantic and asexual because his β€œkind” doesn’t reproduce sexually. he’s capable of deep feelings, but they’re still unlike what humans experience in THEIR deep feelings. he IS capable of love, and it’s important and special. but he’ll never be able to reciprocate human β€œdesire,” even if he wants to.

hikaru, or rather the being that occupies his corpse, is something that has existed without ego for thousands of years. its only recently began to experience ego (so he/its kind of immature lol), but it’s still very interwoven with the memories and feelings of its late host. it’s kind of coming into its own, but only barely. the being inside hikaru is both older than time itself and a brand new innocent β€œlife” form, and he has an agape type romantic appreciation for earthly life

history: Manga synopsis. Additional: "Hikaru" is a "lost child" from the other side (the veil, basically), where ghosts and etc come from. Typically, a human soul goes to the other side...but sometimes they come back to Earth through fabric tears in reality before they're reincarnated, which results in "impurities" like ghosts, etc; humans who aren't ready to move onto their next life are attracted to those fabric tears. Hikaru, however, is outside of the cycle of death/rebirth, like humans are, as its speculated he doesn't have a soul, since he's immortal. Hikaru apparently ended up on the earthly side somehow several hundred years ago, but has only developed an ego and real emotions since occupying his human host body (so a bit less than two years ago). He was labeled as a God by the humans who feared and revered him, and they thought if they didn't offer him human heads, he'd cause plagues, etc...when the reality is, Hikaru is no God (or he is, I guess; it's implied that's just kind of not real), he needed no heads, and caused no calamities. He was, however, able to grant wishes—without need for sacrifice. Oops.

"Hikaru" ended up in the human Hikaru's body because the human Hikaru had slipped and fell down a steep, rough mountainous forest hill in the dead of night. He suffered fatal blunt force trauma, as well as several broken bones. The entity "Hikaru" found Hikaru as he died, whose final wish was for no one to grieve his passing, and for his best friend, "Yoshiki," to be kept company, wishing for his friend to never be lonely. So, the monster Hikaru is imprinted on Yoshiki, more or less. He loves Yoshiki more than anything, and is extremely loyal, even if he's unsure of what feelings are his or his late host's sometimes, and even though he knows he can't love the way a human does, exactly.

In current canon, he and Yoshiki are task to "sewing up" some of the major "holes" that are letting in far more impurities than is sustainable; 5 little villages around where Hikaru used to live prior to having a host body are deeply haunted without his presence. Hikaru used to take in and grind up wayward impurities, which kept the hauntings down. Now, away from the mountain and weakened, he can't do this as effeciently as he used to. Hikaru offered to go back up the mountain alone (and cried a lot about it), but Yoshiki refused, pointing out it wouldn't help anyway. However, neither seems to be sure how they can accomplish closing these reality tears without having to say goodbye forever, since they can only be sealed from one side...

personality: I will sometimes be referring to Hikaru as "Hikaru" where it feels relevant... I hope there's no confusion.

"Hikaru"s personality is largely derivative of his late host, where he gets his name from. This is because he has all of Hikaru's memories, and this frames his context of the human experience when he occupies his late host's dying body. But as he continues to accrue his own experiences through his own lense, more and more differing features make themselves apparent; he is his own person, despite living as the dead boy who he poses as.

Comparatively, "Hikaru" is a lot more sensitive—in comparison to Hikaru, he's a crybaby. Hikaru hates films, but "Hikaru" loves them. Hikaru was a bit mysterious about his true feelings, and "Hikaru" can't hide his at all. It's likely because his human ego is very new—only about a year old—and he's still learning how to be a person. Emotional regulation is challenging, and similar to a child, he's very sweet and earnest.

However, there are inflexibly "inhuman" aspects to him as well; for example, Hikaru doesn't see the difference between life and death, since he's a being that exists outside of time, space, as well as life and death itself. To him, life and death are just souls "changing forms." He's also aware he has no soul, because he isn't mortal; reincarnation doesn't exist for the timeless. So he messes up sometimes (like the time he murdered an old woman because she sensed he was from beyond the veil in a human host), but he doesn't mean to be bad. In fact, Hikaru's extremely sensitive about "doing right," and he's a little insecure about how his nature gets in the way with how humans interpret morals and ethics, as he doesn't wish to offend.

But he's rude in other earnest, well meaning ways—he can be a bit blunt (again, not knowing any better), which suits his other traits such as wearing his feelings on his sleeve. Another example is that he apparently approaches humans with the same kind of affectionate curiosity as a child might to a street cat, leading to inappropriate touching. He also has a ravenous curiosity and love for life, especially since it's so new to him—he sees even mundane things as a blessing and a gift, such as eating good food or even the sloggish heat of hot weather. He likes simple human interaction, and loves humans in general—this is why he's so fiercely protective of his "secret identity," because he doesn't want to lose this life.

Hikaru describes his life prior to occupying his human body as empty, cold and ceaselessly yearning in a manner that was both vague and crushingly deep. As previously stated, Hikaru is known as a "lost child" from the other side, and they're inherently lonely, empty beings. They grant wishes because of their loneliness, which leads to humans misinterpreting them as gods and similar things such as that.

This is part of what informs Hikaru's "instinct" to "take (living) things in," which makes Hikaru attracted to his best friend's "soul"—his weird cosmic ferality has been worse lately, and it scares Hikaru, because he doesn't want to hurt his friend. But it seems in his weakened state, the closer they get, the more Hikaru "desires" him.

Otherwise, Hikaru's just a kid who enjoys life for its mundane novelty; all he wants is to have a peaceful life, eat good food (for pleasure; he doesn't need to eat), and be with his friends. He's obviously a bit conflicted about his identity, but it all comes down to protecting his best friend and answering the wish of the boy whose dead body he gets to experience life through.
